20 Years Ago Today

While it may have been 20 years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play, another wonderful thing also happened 20 years ago today. On August 27th just before my 50th birthday I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent of Africa.

It was a moving, spiritual experience to stand on the roof of Africa. The entire journey was amazing, from my incredible guide Geoffrey Moshi pushing me and motivating me to the summit, to the sunrise over the glacier that brought tears to my eyes.

Standing above the clouds, I realized that I had fallen in love with Africa. The experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. And now as the owner of Infinite Safari Adventures I love sending people on safari for this experience.

I am proud that I am one of the few tour operators who has actually climbed Kili. Yes, you can do it. I did.

In 2005 I met a young Maasai Moran (warrior) who had a dream of finishing high school and going to college. He so impressed me that I told him if he wanted to go to college I would help him do it. I had the honor of attending his graduation several years later. That man was Patrick Papatiti. Patrick’s life was changed and he now runs an anti-poaching unit in the Amboseli area of Kenya. We have been close ever…

  • “TENT” is Not a Four-letter Word in Africa

When new safari travelers ask me where they will be staying and I reply: “tented camps!” you can see their faces fall. You can tell they see themselves sitting on a bedroll on the hard ground, eating s’mores in the dark with the monkeys and mosquitoes. I quickly explain that in Africa, “tent” is not a 4-letter word. On our safaris, tents have comfy beds, hot showers, toilets that flush and wonderful camp staffers who come running with coffee or hot…

  • Wi-Fi in Africa: What You Need to Know

The internet is an essential part of daily life for just about everyone these days. Staying connected to friends, family, work and play is simple in our hometowns or cities..but what about during a safari in Africa? One of the most common questions my guests ask me is – what about Wi-Fi in Africa? Will I have Wi-Fi? How does it work? Does it cost extra? Will I be able to send texts, check Facebook, or contact my family? So…

  • Greetings From East Africa!

As I do every year, I am in Africa looking at properties, searching for new experiences, and seeing old friends. This year I am in East Africa visiting Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. Bella and I strive every day to make sure your safaris are perfect, and this is part of the process. My first stop is Uganda where it has been a few years since I have visited. In the few days I am here I have visited…

  • Honored to Join the Club

As my movie hero Groucho Marx once said: “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member”. However sometimes a membership invitation comes along where you just can’t say no. One that is steeped in history and legend. And even though I might not feel I belong, I am truly honored to be  included. Just recently I was selected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. The Geographical Society of London was founded in 1830 as…

  • RIP Craig

It is not every day that a country and the world mourns the death of an elephant, but Craig was no ordinary elephant. Craig was one of the last “Tusker” elephants with giant tusks measuring over six feet in length. Craig resided in the Amboseli area of Kenya where, as many of you know, Infinite Safari and its Foundation are very involved. While it is sad that Craig has passed, we can take solace in the fact that despite those…
