A Behind-the-Scenes Conversation About Infinite Safari Adventures

Some time ago, I had the chance to sit down with Jason Elkins on the Big World Made Small Adventure Travel Podcast to talk about Africa, safaris, and the story behind Infinite Safari Adventures.

Although the episode was recorded a while back, I realized we had never shared it here on the blog — and it is probably one of the better conversations for anyone who wants to understand how this company came to be.

In the episode, Jason and I talk about my first trip to Africa, how that experience eventually led me away from my career as a lawyer, and why I started Infinite Safari Adventures in 2010.

We also get into what makes our safaris different. For me, a safari has never been just about checking animals off a list. It is about creating a trip that fits the person taking it — whether that means wildlife, culture, kayaking, climbing, conservation, or simply time in places that stay with you long after you return home.

The conversation also touches on the work of the Infinite Safari Foundation and why giving back to the communities and places we visit has always been an important part of what we do.

So, while this episode is not brand new, it is still a great behind-the-scenes look at the history of Infinite Safari Adventures, why I love what I do, and why Africa continues to inspire me after all these years.

In 2005 I met a young Maasai Moran (warrior) who had a dream of finishing high school and going to college. He so impressed me that I told him if he wanted to go to college I would help him do it. I had the honor of attending his graduation several years later. That man was Patrick Papatiti. Patrick’s life was changed and he now runs an anti-poaching unit in the Amboseli area of Kenya. We have been close ever…

After arriving at Solio Ranch and spending the afternoon looking a wildlife and visiting the orphanage, Kevin asked me if I wanted to go with him as at about 7:30 pm 2 male and 1 female ostrich were arriving by truck to be added to the wonderful wildlife here. Of course I said yes. The plan was to meet the truck carrying the ostriches at the orphanage, release them and then head back for dinner. It had been raining here…

While it may have been 20 years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play, another wonderful thing also happened 20 years ago today. On August 27th just before my 50th birthday I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent of Africa. It was a moving, spiritual experience to stand on the roof of Africa. The entire journey was amazing, from my incredible guide Geoffrey Moshi pushing me and motivating me to the summit, to the sunrise over…

As we say at Infinite Safari Adventures, if it can be done, we will make it happen. Our clients have enjoyed renewing wedding vows, taking cooking lessons, and celebrating bar mitzvahs in Africa. But sometimes our clients surprise even us. A few weeks ago, our lovely clients Laurie and Thom were in Rwanda to see the gorillas. Laurie had traveled with us several years ago with her daughter, who coined the term “the Elfie” (see below). Well, Thom surprised Laurie,…

While not cuter than my granddaughter Rosie, I have to admit, “Bumpy” is a very close second! On May 2 Kenya Wildlife Service Vet and Capture team received reports of an infant orphaned hippo in Naivasha. They arrived to find a pint-sized calf nestled beside his mother’s lifeless body. He was found calling out to his mother and nudging her with his blunt little nose, desperately hoping for a response. The vets believe that she died of natural causes, likely…

  • Track A Rhino & Support Saving The Survivors!

Several months ago, I was in the gym watching tv (and yes working out) and saw a story about a company called Fahlo. They were selling beaded bracelets with an image of endangered animals that also allowed people who bought the bracelet to track one of the endangered species. More importantly they donate a portion of their profits to the various wildlife conservation organizations they partner with. You can learn more about them by clicking here – Fahlo. Well, the…
