“TENT” is Not a Four-letter Word in Africa

When new safari travelers ask me where they will be staying and I reply: “tented camps!” you can see their faces fall. You can tell they see themselves sitting on a bedroll on the hard ground, eating s’mores in the dark with the monkeys and mosquitoes.

I quickly explain that in Africa, “tent” is not a 4-letter word.

On our safaris, tents have comfy beds, hot showers, toilets that flush and wonderful camp staffers who come running with coffee or hot tea to wake you up to the sunrise. These are not the type of tents you crawl into at night when camping in the United States. The word for these tents is true glamping.

Last month I had some wonderful clients go on safari in Kenya. They had grown up camping and were used to old-fashioned tents. When they arrived at their first accommodation and saw what I meant by a tent they were blown away. The emailed me to tell me – “you did not tell us you were going to spoil us this much!”

But best yet, they came up with the perfect name for these tents which I am now adopting… “TINO,” a great four-letter word that stands for Tent In Name Only.

When you are on a safari with Infinite Safari Adventures you never have to worry about your comfort or your safety or anything else for that matter. From the moment you land to the moment we put you on the plane to go home you do not plan anything, worry about anything, or reach into your pocket for anything except maybe some drinks, tips and souvenirs.

Just text your friends and family: “I’m sleeping in the African bush in my TINO! OMG!”

While it may have been 20 years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play, another wonderful thing also happened 20 years ago today. On August 27th just before my 50th birthday I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent of Africa. It was a moving, spiritual experience to stand on the roof of Africa. The entire journey was amazing, from my incredible guide Geoffrey Moshi pushing me and motivating me to the summit, to the sunrise over…

As you know the Infinite Safari Foundation supports conservation, humanitarian and educational initiatives throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. We are proud to support the Women in Tourism Program in Zambia, created by the African Bush Camps Foundation. The foundation is affiliated with African Bush Camps, which frequently hosts Infinite Safari Adventures guests. In many communities, young women remain largely shut out of tourism opportunities due to limited access to further education, financial barriers, geographic isolation, and social norms. Many lack the training, networks,…

  • Meet Some Of The Kenyan Team

Some of you who have traveled with Infinite Safari in Kenya may recognize the two happy smiling faces in the photo. They are Starphor (on the left) a driver for my ground partner and Dennis (on the right) a guide. Why are they smiling? They are smiling because they love what they do, take pride in doing it and are happy when our clients are happy. I am always grateful as they take such great care of my clients and…

  • Solio Ranch – A Magical Place

After a couple of wonderful days in Nairobi it was time to head up to a very special, magical place. Solio Ranch which spans over 45,000 acres.  I am spending two wonderful, moving days here. The wildlife is amazing with huge herds of black and white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, eland, oryx, impala, hartebeest, jackals, ostrich and that was all this morning! The person who runs this place Kevin Carr-Harley is the most passionate conservationist I have ever had the pleasure to meet.  Including the tireless work he does managing this place he has also started…
